NEW ANIME AND GAME ADAPTATION OF DRAGON QUEST: THE ADVENTURE OF DAI ANNOUNCED AT JUMP FESTA 2020

On December 21, 2019 during Jump Festa 2020 in Japan; Square Enix and original Dragon Quest game creator Yuji Horii took to the big stage to announce that a brand-new anime adaptation of Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai is set to arrive in the Fall of 2020, produced by Toei Animation. This new adaptation will be a hybrid of beautiful 2D and 3D animation and will be based on Ichida Kouji’s classic manga of the same name that tied-in with the hugely popular Dragon Quest video game series.

The story of the series is set on a small island of peaceful monsters, where Dai - the only human on the island who was raised by monsters - lives. One day, the monsters on the island turn on Dai and start to attack him, so he goes on a quest to save his world.

The original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai was published in the Weekly Shonen Jump from 1989 to 1996. During its reign and over the years, the manga has sold over 47 million copies and also gained a loyal and massive fan-base. It was the first serialized manga that tied-in to the RPG video game series. The manga previously received an anime adaptation before back in 1991 in the form of a 46-episode TV series.

At the same time, it was also announced at Jump Festa 2020 that a new game based on Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai will also be coming as well, alongside the new anime adaptation. Ryutaro Ichimura, producer of the recent Dragon Quest XI and multiple other Dragon Quest games will return to produce the game.

The original manga will also be re-published every week for free on the Shonen Jump + app.
